Ask a new question. I've been using MS Teams for about a year now. I usually work with Word and Excel documents. Until a few weeks ago I have always worked with the option Open in desktop app.

This opens the document in the desktop app. But it doesn't start Word. This is with all the files I try. Now when I need to work on a file I have to work in the web app.

This is a little annoying since you don't have all the tabs required for editing and other things. I have made no changes to my settings or anything. I have tried to uninstall en reinstall MS teams and even MS office. I have looked on the official site for help and in this community. So fare I still haven't found a solution. This thread is locked. Based on your description, Teams cannot call Word desktop app to open the files. Please first try to clear Teams cache to rebuild your Teams structure and check if it helps. Fully exit the Microsoft Teams desktop client. Meanwhile, to determine whether it's a client issue, please sign in Teams web version to check if it's available to open the file in Word desktop app.

Thanks for the help. I have tried your method and still have the problem. I have tried it in the web app and from there i still can't open the documents in word. So it might be a problem with word. If this is an issue with word how would i troubleshoot this problem?

Is this an add-on or an extension? If you cannot open Word or Excel file in both Teams desktop and Teams web, I'd like to collect the log files to help further analyze this issue. Please first follow the steps mentioned in my last reply to clear Teams cache again , and then restart Teams to reproduce this issue 2 or 3 times.

After that, right click Teams icon in the system tray and click "Get logs" to collect Teams client log. Sign in Teams web in Chrome browser. After the web page is completely loaded, press F12 to open web debug tool. Then navigate to Network tab, and reproduce this issue 2 or 3 times. When there's no further traffic in the list, click the round button to stop capturing. Finally, export the traffics as HAR file. As a side note, please close all the other web pages when you capture the traffics.

After you collect both the log files, please send them to us via Private Message. I've checked your log files. From the client log, I found that your Teams client did have the action to open Word desktop app.

However, in the web log, I didn't find any related actions that Teams try to open Word or Excel file. Compared with a normal log, when you tried to open files in Teams web, it didn't trigger a Request URL to open Word or Excel desktop app. So I'm not sure whether it's related with the Word app since there're different behaviors.

In this scenario, you can first make sure the default apps to open these files are Office apps. To further narrow down this issue, please open the SharePoint team site and try to open the files in desktop app to check if it works.
